With each new iPhone release, Apple introduces fresh features to its camera system, and the iPhone 15 series is certainly not an exception. According to MacRumors, most of the rumors about the iPhone 15 cameras are likely true. They have information about the 48MP camera in the regular iPhone models and the special periscope lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might get a big upgrade in their main camera. They could switch to a 48MP camera with a sensor from Sony, although we don't know which one yet. This would be a significant improvement because, until now, even the iPhone 13 Pro had only a 12MP main camera. The result would be much sharper and clearer pictures, especially in the dark.
People have been talking about this for a while, so it's looking quite likely. But that's not the only thing changing. The entire iPhone 15 lineup might also get something called "Dynamic Island" which was first introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro models last year. However, the Ultra Wide camera is not anticipated to receive any major improvements. It's likely to keep its current 12-megapixel resolution and ƒ/2.4 aperture.
When it comes to the iPhone 15 Pro, most of the upgrades are aimed at the Telephoto and Ultra Wide cameras. Surprisingly, the Main camera is expected to still use the same Sony IMX-803 image sensor as the iPhone 14 Pro. This information goes against earlier rumors that suggested the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max would use the Sony IMX-903 image sensor. However, both the Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras will get improvements compared to the iPhone 14 Pro. This means better picture quality and higher resolution photos.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max stands out the most among all the models. We've got information from industry sources confirming that this phone will feature a completely new periscope lens system for its Telephoto camera. This periscope zoom technology should greatly enhance the iPhone 15 Pro Max's ability to zoom in on subjects. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max could only manage a 3x zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to offer anywhere from 5x to 10x zoom.
Unlike most cameras where the image sensor is right under the camera lens, periscope systems use angled mirrors to bounce light towards the image sensor. This redirection of light allows for optical zoom that exceeds what regular telephoto camera systems can achieve.
For now, it seems that Apple is introducing the periscope lens exclusively in the iPhone 15 Pro Max, likely due to space limitations. Our sources suggest that the camera module used in the iPhone 15 Pro Max is somewhat larger than what's in the iPhone 14 Pro models and the smaller iPhone 15 Pro. Apple had to increase the camera module's size to accommodate the periscope lens hardware, and this, in turn, required adjustments to other internal components like the midframe assembly.
In addition to the periscope zoom feature, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will also feature the same 48-megapixel IMX-803 image sensor, as well as the same Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras as those found on the iPhone 15 Pro.
Periscope cameras, often referred to as folded cameras, function by positioning a significant portion of their length sideways within the phone's body. The external lens resembles a typical phone camera, but it conceals a prism or mirror that redirects light by 90 degrees. Prisms are angled transparent blocks made of glass or plastic, which have been utilized in optical devices like binoculars or SLR camera viewfinders for many years. High-quality prisms generally have minimal impact on image quality. Modern periscope cameras typically offer 5x zoom, roughly equivalent to a 120mm focal length on a standard camera. In short, with a periscope camera, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have between 5x and 10x zoom.
